I heard a rumor that you can use your 3DS as a Gamepad in the future?

I heard it from some random person I was having passive conversation to. Never heard of it before or since. Has anyone else heard of this?

Switch JRPGs with Shooters, and I'm sure that's what they're saying about us.

I haven't. But why would you use a small screen over the Wii U gamepad???

I guess if it breaks? Or you already have a 3DS and want a Wii-u so you save money by not buying the pad?

Nintendo said before launch they intended 3DS to be used as a controller.

I'll bet you that you will never be able to buy a Wii U where the Gamepad is optional.

Why would you want to?
Only 3DS functionality I know of is hitching it to your U for the eshop, no point you can just tether to you wi-fi & its done.
