It's not Xenoblade 2 it's just made by the same team doing something similar but cooler. more realistic, and mixed in with monster hunter.

I'll be pissed if this awesome game gets bad ratings because it's not Xenoblade when it comes out.

You guys were right; HD makes everything look brown and realistic. Ah well, I'll still love and remember the colourful and vibrant Wii version.

There are (few) Xenoblade areas that look like this too. They just choose a crappy part to show off. Not like we're seeing the perfect sunny grasslands from Xenoblade or the vibrant cities.

Look at the combat, they have almost the exact same combat wheel set up, just square instead of round.

i think we've seen like 5 sec of footage max. Considering how big and diverse Xenoblade was, I'd hold my judgement on the supposed sequel.

The game looks how it looks, it's not going to magically change art styles or colour palette.

I highly doubt this. This is an early build of the game. Graphical tweaks are very common.

This.
Look at the first trailer for Xenoblade:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGXjKmAenjc

While the areas are the same, the final product look A LOT better and the environments definitely stand out more.

I think it's much too early to accurately say this game lacks color. The art style may make the game less vibrant than Xenoblade's less realistic art style, however, that doesn't mean they can't come up with areas that will really pop out and make us stare in awe.

Also, you can clearly see some areas have more color than others from the announcement trailer for this game. Give it a chance before you assume it to be Gears of War-tier bland.

HD has nothing to do with the color. Stop trolling. Or at least stop being silly. The art style is why anything has bright or realistic in its gameplay. High Definition only applies to the picture on whatever is being broadcasted. If anything, video that isn't in HD naturally looks faded and blurry as opposed to video in HD. Look at HDTV; bright colors are still used and look even better.

Imagine you're making a 2D game for those old CRT TVs. Your sprites are simplistic (and they have to be to make any sense when they end up looking so blurry) but very easy to draw. Due to how simplified or abstract you make things, your art style is more representational than realistic. But it's very unique and inspired, nevertheless. Although your color palette is limited, you use only contrasting colors to make everything stand out.

But the next 2D game you get to work on is intended for 720p HDTVs. The amount of work you have to do just increased exponentially and you no longer have the time to do all the sprites and backgrounds yourself. The development team itself doesn't have the time to build an engine from the ground up either. Luckily, there are many engines that your team can license and it comes many assets such as sprites and backgrounds for you to use and modify. The art no longer needs to be representational and it's much easier to achieve that realistic look with pre-built assets than to build a more fantastic style from scratch. The game engine you licensed has its own built-in rendering system already configured for the most realistic settings by default, giving your game a gritty look. From your sprites to the rendering engine, gritty is the default style.

In the end, Smurf, if there were no correlation between HD and muted color palettes, then why have we seen such a stark jump in brown/gray since the jump to HD? The pattern is there. And the Wii U might not be safe from it. The look of early shots from X[eno] aren't giving us much hope.

Considering this is the first stuff we seen on the game, there's still a lot more we haven't seen that we'll be seeing in the future. I'm expecting to see a lot more.

Still looks great and there's still a lot of colour. I don't see the problem.
