Can I play a game on the controller without the system on?

I just got a Wii U and I'm loving it so far. I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but I just wanted to make sure. Also, how far away can I be from the system while playing on the controller? What happens if I go out of range?

You'll get an out-of-range message. The controller depends on the stream of data from console to controller.

The system only streams to the controller. There is no disc reader in the controller.

Depending on your house layout you could play anywhere in there unless you have thick walls.

If you go out of range the controller tells you it cant find the w ii u.
Look a you.... sticking to the plan.

the controller is just that - a controller. it may have a screen, speakers a mic and stuff, but its still completely dependent on the console being on like every other home console.

No. You can play some games just on the controller, without needing a TV, but the system has to be on.
My ideas for Crash Bandicoot Returns:
Official "Co-Pun-isher" of the C2 board.
