What is the technical definition of shovelware?

#1GloryChaosPosted 1/27/2013 9:27:19 AM
Topic. Does it have one? Or is it a term that it tossed around to label games you don't really like? I assumed it referred to games that were tossed together without much time or effort and thrown onto systems in the hopes en masse. Like what THQ used to do with the Wheel of Fortune or Jeapordy games.

I'm not saying Shovelware is all bad. Just, how do you argue what is and what isn't? I've seen Style Savvy: Trendsetters and Scribblenauts Unlimited referred to as Shovelware, which sort of muddles up what I thought the term was supposed to be used for.

I'd say it has a very subjective definition. Lots of people like to call games "shovelware" because the games are popular, yet the people don't like them.

Eh, it's like 2 or 3 people who post a lot, making it look like more people hate the game than is actually true. -LordRattergun

In reality, it's just an EXTREMELY poorly coded mess that has little to no value or quality.

Shovel-ware are those obscure licensed games or games targeted at young children you'd see in the bargain bin for the Wii.

But Scribblenauts Unlimited... Oh, those trolls are funny.

I doubt it has a technical definition, but as I've heard it, Shovelware is basically low quality software that's quickly thrown together and shoveled out, often with little content and less polish.

Usually movie based or toy based games would be the best examples of shovelware.
