Who would think that the PS4/720 are going to be 4k?

This. Like the Wii U, most games will still be 720p.

lol it's sad when people use terms like "HD Twins".

All that does is imply that they are the same damn system.

PS3 and 360 are pretty much the same system though. They barely have any worthwhile exclusives (with the best games on both being multiplats) and the only real difference is Microsoft ripping you off with overpriced online.

720 isn't going to support 4K and it's doubtful that PS4 will. The technology is just not cheap enough yet.

Except the hardware needs to be a lot more powerful? Also, I was referring to the cost for consumers.

Developers are going broke left and right supporting HD. How many would survive 4k?

4K/UHD televisions cost roughly $25,000 at the moment (http://store.sony.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=20153&langId=200&catalogId=100803&identifier=S_TV_4K) . If we assume that they roughly halve in price by the end of each year...

2012: $25,000
2013: $15,000
2014: $7,000
2015: $4,000
etc.

So by 2015, this model predicts that they become competitively priced with current high end HD tv's, and slightly more expensive than HD televisions in ~2006 (iirc). That means that in the latter half of this gen, 4K COULD become accessible to the masses. Then again, consider the fact that 'most' gamers are ~15-30yo (kids/young adults), and buying a $4000 tv is not really viable. By this logic, 4K doesn't seem like a worthwhile target for hardware or software manufacturers this generation.

This. Like the Wii U, most games will still be 720p.

Realistically I do see them running almost all games at 1080p after a year or so, mainly because devs will get the chance to optimize to the modern architecture all 3 systems appear to be conforming to. Then again, the Wii U might start doing the same, time will tell. There's also a good chance a few [graphically impressive] launch window titles will be 1080p on the 720/PS4, but I highly doubt it will be the universally true.

At the end of the day though, they won't have the Nintendo exclusives that the Wii U will, so I personally couldn't care less even if they do run 4K and the Wii U doesn't. If they have enough exclusives that I can't play on PC, I might be able to justify the money/time to buy one of them before the generation ends - though I can't say I was terribly enticed last gen by the ps360. My family bought a 360 for my younger brothers, so when I am back home I do enjoy a bit of Halo, but otherwise I haven't missed out on enough to care. I reckon this gen won't be much different.

To answer your question TC: 'Defeat' in this context is a bit silly. If you are going purely by sales, then I reckon more modest numbers (may ~10mil) would suggest it's on track to gain such a defeat, or at least comparative numbers. But under this pretense, you would be admitting that the Wii 'defeated' the PS360. I think more accurate questions would be '(A) Will Nintendo make a profit this generation? (B) Will Nintendo's fanbase be satisfied by what the Wii U offers, and (C) can said fanbase expand over the course of the generation?'. I would answer '(A) It's probable. (B) On a whole, likely but that's entirely subjective. (B) Probably a steady increase but nothing extraordinary.'. I can't see the future though, so who knows - but those are the questions that should be posed regarding all 3 of the major manufacturers, especially with the current economic situation and encroaching TV-set 'android' boxes (eg. Ouya).

15m is a ridiculous amount for a handheld let alone a console.

So if Nintendo changed the name of the Wii - U, would they be pulling a U-Wii?
