I think the prices are messed up.

On the side bar, the prices are 344 and 294 for the deluxe and basic.

Costco isn't taking a loss on those sale prices either. Looks like my guess of Nintendo selling them at a loss to make retailers happy is 100% true.

Anyway, does Costco online require you to be a member? This temporary sale will probably cause them to sell out of all their current stock if it isn't a requirement.

How do you figure Costco isn't taking a loss on those? Do you run Costco?

No, I just know how Nintendo operates. They cut retailers massive margins to foster good will. The 3DS cost $101 to make at launch, they sold them to retailers for $160, leaving retailers with a $90 margin per unit.

When they cut the price Nintendo let retailers keep their margin on all units they already had purchased. This is why they took a loss with the price drop. Once all the old stock was sold they were making money again at a renegotiated rate.

With the Wii U Nintendo most likely gave retailers a large buffer zone just as insurance against a possible price cut (retailers probably demanded it) This would explain the $21 loss per unit from a company that has never sold hardware for a loss.

Most companies are easy to read. Especially with how much Nintendo is constantly scrutinized. Their business practices have always been about keeping on good terms with big box retailers, and they have always cut them deals. The 3DS price drop media blitz made this information even easier to find. It also has a lot to do with why Amazon isn't stocking their hardware. (both subjects are something I did a lot of digging to figure out why they had a falling out)

So it shouldn't take a lot for you to understand that a company ALREADY TAKING A LOSS isn't going to risk further loss on a TEMPORARY SALE through costco of all places.

Nintendo is selling to retailers at a $21 loss, meaning that the wholesale price is the price they are taking the loss on, not the retail price. Retailers won't sell hardware like this for a loss, Costco is making a profit still, so the markup is over $50 per unit.
