Sonic & Mario platformer crossover. Why hasn't it happened yet?

People have been wanting this for over 10 years. Yet all we got is the stupid Sonic & Mario at the Olympics franchise.

Someone should put a watergun to Iwata's head and force him to make it or get wet.

The closest thing we've gotten is Super Smash Bros Brawl. That's kind of a platformer... with fighting.

because Sega and Nintendo have both been focusing on releasing the individual games in rapid succession over the last few years and they're worried that a game featuring both characters would compete with the games featuring a solo character.

Although they could easily (and wisely) release a sonic/mario game,wait 6 months and release a mario/sonic game and then release a Sonic & Mario game 6 months after that and it wouldn't affect the success or sales of the earlier games if was kept secret until 2 months before it's release.

It could also be based on how completely different the two gameplay formulas are because sonic is more like a fast paced rollercoaster and mario is a more precise platformer that takes careful timing.

Which is exactly why it would be so nice if they could combine the 2 and create a fun & balanced game.

I've heard that they haven't done it because the characters are too different - that Sonic's speed results in a different play style from the Mario games. That's the excuse the companies use anyway.

Personally, I'm not sure I'd want to play a Mario and Sonic platformer. Do we really want to see Mario turned into one of Sonic's friends?

A Mario galaxy/Sonic 3D would be the only viable way to successfully utilize both characters.
