An HDMI Workaround?

#1deoxyscyclonePosted 2/1/2013 3:53:56 PM
Hallo! I've been messing around with my Wii U for a while now, and I have an issue.

You see, as I'm sure you all know, the Wii U can play games in HD via its HDMI cable. However, my HDTV is old and doesn't have an HDMI port. I'm fine with having to use the Wii component cables since HD isn't a vital thing for me, but I would like to try anyway.

Now, I got a few adapters to try different things. One thing I tried was an HDMI to Monitor adapter. My TV has a port for monitors, so I thought that may work! Hoorah! I have the Wii U in HD! ...But for some reason, there is absolutely no sound coming from the TV now... Only from the GamePad... Sigh...

So what I want to know is: How can I play the Wii U in HD on my HDTV, but also with sound? Are there any other adapters or workarounds you guys can think of? I'm willing to try whatever you have in mind. I look forward to any responses I get!

Thank you in advance! I appreciate it! :3

Component DOES do HD.

A standard PC monitor port is limited to video only, so naturally the sound from the HDMI cable wouldn't get through. Your only options that I can see, unfortunately, are to just go with component cables or buy a new TV.

Incidentally, as RahzarX points out above, component cables are capable of HD. They can go up to at least 720p resolution. And since most WiiU games (if not all of them) are rendered at 720p, you wouldn't actually be losing anything.

Component (Blue/Green/Red) is an analog signal instead of digital, but can still display 1080p.

Oh, ok! Thank you, guys!

I actually got the name wrong and meant the composite cables (red/yellow/white), but I guess it worked out that I was able to find something that worked! I just ordered a Wii/Wii U component cable from Amazon.

Is there any huge difference between playing through HDMI and Component?

The difference isn't huge. Noticeable, yes, but not huge. HDMI looks a tiny bit sharper than composite, but you really have to be looking for the difference to actually see it.

Cancel your order and get this instead:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=114&cp_id=11404&cs_id=1140401&p_id=5689&seq=1&format=2

It's most likely less expensive and of higher quality than what you ordered from Amazon. It also looks good.

I wouldn't worry that you have to use component cable and not an HDMI cable. Since your TV doesn't even have an HDMI input, I doubt that it can do 1080p anyway. Your TV is most likely 720p or 1080i, which the component cable can output at just fine.

Ok, cool. I'm not a freak over graphics, and hate it when games put graphics over gameplay anyway. So as long as it looks pretty, I'll be fine. :P

My TV doesn't have an HDMI port, but it is 1080i. The component cable will render that just fine, correct?

And by the way, this is the cord I ordered from Amazon. Would you recommend this one, or the one you listed? (Both are cheap enough, so meh.

Get the one you listed at 10FT, that's a monster of a cable and it's also braided which is very nice.

The one I posted also has a mesh jacket, but it's only six feet. You don't need a cable longer than that though. Plus it's one third of price. Don't waste money of stuff like cables. It's why I always use Monoprice.
