Nintendo can move NNIDs from one console to another, right?

In that case, they should currently be able to cover you even if your console is stolen. Since they can verify what games you've downloaded as long as you have the registration code for your console, there should be no trouble. You'd have to simply let them know what happened and they would transfer your ID and give your the permission to download your digital titles for free again, right?

Such a roundabout way of doing things is inferior to the options that other companies provide, but it should still be feasible (not that it excuses anything). And this is better than arguing that "It's your fault you didn't take care of your console!" anyway.

All you do is call them and say this is the issue and they will transfer the info. i had my wii stolen and all they needed was a police report for the vc games.

Really? So they were able to give you permission to download your titles again as long as you have a police report?

I can't see this working for handheld systems at all though.
