The dreamcast and gamecube have my favourite controllers.

The Japanese Sega Saturn pad is easily my favourite - the best control for fighting games if you don't have an arcade stick.

Wavebird

I could play from my bed or couch instead instead of sitting right under the TV.

Definitely the GameCube controller, followed the N64 controller and Wii U game pad.

Every controller ever except the Xbox controller S...that thing sucked. The original Xbox controller was leagues better than that small piece of crap

We impose order on the chaos of organic evolution. You exist because we allow it, and you will end because we demand it.

Well, the reality is that the N64 had a couple years with a standard analog stick ahead of Sony and their optional Dual Analog and Dual Shock that only started to enter the market after the N64's release. While the dual analog/shock are better (no argument) it wasn't what people were growing up with at the time. I played so much Goldeneye that even when Halo came out years later I still had to play left handed and inverted due to the N64.

I played the heck out of Goldeneye too, but I still hated the controls even then. If only the analog were where the DPAD was like the DC. Hell,
I still think I have a Superpad64 Plus laying around. Once I found one of those, I really started to enjoy N64 games a lot more in general.

Gamepad is my favorite overall.

But it could depend on the game.

I always liked the giant Saturn analog pad:

I always found it ergonomically well-designed for something so big. The 6-button front is something that I still miss, and was great for the slew of good fighters on the system (at least for someone who didn't care to bother with a dedicated fight stick).

Obviously, it wouldn't work well today for lack of 2nd analog, etc, but it was great at the time.

Among modern consoles, I'd go with the DualShock. I've always preferred the symmetrical analog layout to the asymmetrical GC/XBox design.
