I really hate it when people don't call the Wii U next gen

I don't even have a Wii U, but when people do that, it shows they are ignorant and unwilling to give Nintendo a chance.

The Wii U is a home console for new game that follows a 7th gen console, therefore it is a next-gen by definition.

On top of that, they have shown that it is more powerful than the PS3 and 360.

would u consider the iPad 5 a next gen tablet over the iPad 4? cuz that's what's going on here. there's good argument that Wii U is only a stop gap before PS4 and 720 arrive.

No, because all it is is a spec upgrade. There are no addiitonal features, and the hardware was the same aside from what was upgraded. If the PS4 was just a PS3 with a better processor and graphics card, it wouldn't be next-gen either.

The Wii U isn't just a Wii spec upgrade. It adds tons of new features.

this where u may be walking on thin ice. a lot of the wii u is comparable to wii. it even has full hardware BC. and the games are being market the same way, just with that little blue u after the wii. the features that u base ur statement on are mostly software changes.

Did you miss that giant controller with a screen?

that's the best argument u have. and if rumors are true, then PS4 and MS are both looking to have some sort of touchscreen controller. so wii u is next gen in that respect.

it could be a case of one step forward, two steps back.

Or my personal way of looking at it: What's currently on the market and competing. 360/PS3/WiiU are all current-gen. 360/PS3 will become last-gen once the successors release. PS4/720 are next-gen because they're next in line, they haven't released.

Best darn quote in this thread. So far.

Now that I really think about it, my earlier statement was wrong. Under that statement, the Gamecube was in the same generation as the N64, and the PS3 is in the same generation as the PS2.

The computer/tablet industry is a little bit different than the video game industry. With computers, minor updates are often made throughout the life of a device to keep up with a market that updates very quickly. Major generation changes happen when you have a major revision of the hardware and addition of new features.

The video game industry is different, as specs don't change as quickly, and all devices are evaluated mostly on how they run external software. Therefore, looking back through the history of the video game industry a spec update would count as next generation for any console.

Not changing this sig until we get a new main series Tales game released on a Nintendo console in the US

ya that's true. and that's the problem most of us gamers are having with this "brave new world" of gaming. we'll all look back on it in 20 years and be like "duh, what were we all smoking?"

So the Ouya is an 8th generation console as well?

Since it fits the definition

Yes.

Why wouldn't it be?

It isn't an xbox?

Next gen won't start unless the PS4 or the new Xbox comes out.
Sorry bro, but the Wii U is late entry to the current gen.

Alright, so that means that the Wii was in the PS2 gen. And the GC was in the generation of the Saturn and PS1. Yeah that makes lots of sense.

In all honesty, all dedicated gaming systems are using hardware that's at least a year old, so when compared to high end PC's they're always last gen.
