2x current gen is what Sony fans are saying the PS4 will be.

Wii U not next gen?

Show me any generation ps3 or 360 game that runs and looks just as good as Wii U's 1st generation the wonderful 101.

If you can't then wii u is next gen.
period
no debate
deal with it.

Either the TC is ignorant, or just troll baiting. When people say it's not next gen they are correct. While timewise it is next gen, hardware wise (which is what actually matters) it is not. Now if what is being rumored about 720 and ps4 not going down the powerhouse road route is true, but still stronger than the wii u they would be "8th gen". Although in reality they would be more like 7.5 gen.

Was the Ps2/GCN/Xbox to PS3/wii/360 the first generation change many people have seen? Because that's how it seems and given the length of the generation it seems possible. Most generations have not seen such a huge leap in technology that the move to hd did. Sure the NES to SNES was kind of big and 3D gaming with the N64 and PS was pretty big but really its not super likely that the PS4 and the like will be that much better than the Wii U. They could be but I personally doubt it. And everyone who says the Wii U isonly as good as the 360 and ps3 because it's games look as good as games currently released for them need to think about the fact that the Wii U is matching them and has been out for a few months. It took them 7 years to get to this point. Think what the Wii U will look like at the end of its lifetime if it is this good at the beginning.

There is no such thing as "hardware wise" generations. Every console aims to do something different from the others. The gameboy was notably weaker than its competition, but it aimed for price and reliability, that didn't make it a previous generation console. In fact, if all generations in video games did was update the specs, home consoles would be dead by now with the power modern computers have today.

Console gens have never been determined by their specs. Hell the Jaguar was designed to compete with the SNES, but its considered to be in the same gen as the N64. The Wii was never considered to be part of the Gamecube generation of consoles either.

Console gens can either be determined by succession, or by competition. I know the folks who build the Wikipedia pages on console gens used competition to determine them, but I prefer to look at succession.

Not changing this sig until we get a new main series Tales game released on a Nintendo console in the US

Precedent has always set that new consoles are significantly more powerful than their competition. Modern day gaming started with the NES which was 8 bit. The move to 8 bit was a big leap, not only having better graphics and more colours available, but more power. N64 led onto 3d gaming (a big innovation). Gamecube took 3d gaming far beyond what was possible on an n64. Not counting the Wii (for obvious reasons) the PS3/Xbox 360 took their former generation and improved the grpahics, power, and started having consoles be more than something to play games (netflix, movies, etc). What does the wii u bring? While it is more powerful than the ps3 (as one would hope) it is not able to do something so out of reach that it could not be dumbed down for the ps3. So you can play dumb and act like generations only deal with time, but that is unsubstantiated bs.

So when does a generation begin or end their buddy? Ususally there is some set time. Like 5 years, 10 years, etc. Oh wait...there is nothing established for consoles...since that definition does not apply to gaming consoles. What is the ps4 comes out in 5 years? 2 years? 13 years? When is it considered 8th gen, 9th gen, 10th gen, etc?

It's called the graphics ceiling. The point where games literally look like real life. We are almost there. Once we are there, there will be no more room left for future consoles to be all about graphics.
