The only one that's failed cataclysmicly in the recent years is The Old Republic, and that had nothing to do with it being an MMO. It was simply just a terrible RPG in every respect.

Or are you one of those people that imply a game going free to play after being a subscription-based MMO is failing.

While I'm not a particular fan of MMOs, I will say they can be very popular, but TOR wasn't the only abysmal failure recently.

FFXIV comes to mind, but at least they're trying to fix it and redo it. The EXP cap alone was just plain awful.
I don't see Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony. I see Mario, Zelda, Uncharted, Resident Evil, Gears of War, Alan Wake, Heavy Rain, etc. Play games, not companies.
