I have the Deluxe Wii U (32GB) and plan on buying games at retail instead of download. But I do plan on getting eShop games, and DLC for future games that have it. Should I go ahead and buy an external hard drive or is the Wii U itself enough?

32GB should do fine for a while if you aren't buying full games digitally. Most DLC is less than 1GB in size. You'll definitely need to upgrade in the future though, unless you don't buy a lot of games.
It depends on how many eshop games and DLC you buy.
I have no idea how much space they take up. I thought maybe there was a rough average to go by.
the biggest N64 games take up like 50 megs. DLC take up a lot more depending on what it is. Then if you download any full size games, for example super street fighter IV Arcade Edition takes up 18 gigs on PS3 meaning it takes up 18 to download another 18 to install before it can delete the installation file. So you would need the entire 32 gigs in that situation. With graphical improvements on the way games and their dlc will only get bigger. Now or later if you game a lot your eventually going to want space but if I were you I would wait till later that way you are able to buy a bigger hard drive for the same price.
