EA: "Next-gen consoles will most likely not be backwards compatible"

The next generation of consoles will "most likely not be backwards compatible," according to EA chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen.

The next gen can wait. I'm happy right where I am.

The EA exec made this comment during a question and answer session at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference in San Francisco earlier today (via Gamasutra) where he hypothesised that current gen consoles will still be going strong in fiscal 2014, because those invested in sports games won't want to hop ship to a new platform mid-season if they can't carry their data with them.

"An important thing to remember is that next-gen consoles will most likely not be backwards compatible," said Jorgensen. "If you [play] multiplayer on a game, you'll most likely not be able to play with someone on a different generation."

He noted that a large share of EA's upcoming library is sports titles, which are aligned with the sports calender. So if a new console comes out around Christmas, most players won't want to wait that long and thus won't invest in the new generation until after the season is over.

"Fiscal year 2014 will still be a fairly large gen-three if there's a console business that comes in at the tail end of the year, mainly because a lot of our titles are built around sports calendars... And if a next-gen console doesn't come out until next Christmas, most people won't wait. They'll want to be involved in getting those titles early, because their friends are all playing those titles," Jorgensen explained. "If they all hold on and continue to play on third-generation, you'll probably not see that box purchase until after the soccer season's over."

We'll know more when Sony announced the PS3's successor on 20th February and Microsoft is expected to reveal its new console in the coming months.

I'm really starting to lose track if Sports games are important to Nintendo fans or not.

Read between the lines. He's talking to investors. They obviously just want to hear that their 2014 lineup will still sell on PS3 & 360 so don't worry about how the next consoles will affect forecasts. The new consoles will get ports the bridge year, than the last gen consoles will get ports for 2015.

Does he really need to reassure them? Are the investors that stupid that they think new consoles start with an install base of 50 million and that old console games will suddenly stop selling? Are they new to gaming at all?

I guess I really shouldn't underestimate how stupid men in suits can be, but if money is their motivation, and I believe it is with them, the alternative just doesn't make more money.

Someone please tell the current EA management that they've been making games since well before the actual gen-three in the 80s. It's getting embarassing and depressing.

Hehe, this.

But really, why the hell would a company like EA, who have no bearing on the way companies like Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony develop their consoles, be so confident as to say that there's going to be no backwards-compatibility?

I'm still thinking what EA means whenever they talk about "Gen-Three". Only thing I can think of is when the current dynamic of the Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo 3-way war, which is going on its third generation. Or he thinks only in terms of Microsoft consoles.

He's only commenting on the backwards compatibility of EA's new sports titles. PS4 & 720 EA Sports games won't have player pools with their PS3 & 360 counterparts.

Just assuring that people will stick to where their friends are playing the sport games, which is on the consoles with the biggest user bases.

It isn't saying PS4 and 720 consoles won't be backwards compatible with game software from Xbox, 360, PS1, PS2 or PS3.

We're in Gen three, or rather, the 3rd generation since the induction of full 3d graphics, as described internally by developers.

Technically it's Gen four now, as VITA, 3DS, and Wii U have already launched and we're still awaiting the final two competitors.
