I think what some people are getting at is that the previous Lego games all featured some form of local co-op, with later games trying to split the screen rather than keep both players on the screen at the same time.
So I can understand why some people may be disappointed. It's entirely possible for someone to have played each Lego game with their child, in multiplayer, and wind up being disappointed this game has removed it.
Personally, though, I'm excited for the game either way. It looks great. Maybe the multiplayer just doesn't fit the game. It's certainly not worth dismissing the game over.
