Yea? Why is there no hype for this console unlike the over whelming demand for the original wii?

I think its lack of games and advertising.

I think there is also some brand confusion going on too.

Because Nintendo wrongly thought they could aim for the hardcore gamers again. It seems they completely forgot the Wii sold a lot thanks to casuals. Hardcore gamers abandoned Nintendo during the SNES era.

For the most part, all you have to do is go to a store and look at the available Wii U titles. Not a whole lot of appealing stuff yet.

I own one, and I like it. Looking forward to more too.

Tablet controller is no good.

Wii-U is only about as powerful as a PS3 or 360.

I agree with the advertising as well. It's like they are not even pushing sales for the wii u. Or at least trying too push it

Because:
It has very few games currently and very few even announced.
It has no must have games.
It has the worst 3rd party support of any current day console.
It has a very poor online service.
It has a clunky bulky controller that has to be charged every 4 or so hours.
Games that are multiplatform run worse on it than the other consoles out.
Games are announced then cancelled or delayed regularly.
The list goes on...

They admitted to having difficulty getting their games out on time. I think once that happened, they severely cut back on ads. No point in selling a lot of systems at a loss if you don't have your software ready to recoup the difference. Expect an ad blitz once they are ready to release their games.
