The current generation is what exists in the present.

The current generation is:
Wii U
Wii
PS3
Xbox360

The next generation is:
Wii U
Whatever Sony releases next
Whatever Microsoft releases next

So, technically, everything is the "current generation."

However, because the Wii preceded the Wii U, the Wii U is "next generation."

Sony and Microsoft don't yet have a next generation console.

So up until Jan 4th of this year, you considered the PS2, "current gen"?

It's probably because saying "current-gen consoles" is a lot easier than saying "Current and some previous gen consoles" or "Current and next gen consoles"

Not changing this sig until we get a new main series Tales game released on a Nintendo console in the US

Jan 4th? What? The PS3 has been out for much longer than since Jan 4th.

Jan 4th? What? The PS3 has been out for much longer than since Jan 4th.

I was simply saying that going by Sharky's logic, up until Jan 4th of this year, the PS2 was still officially offered at retail and supported by Sony making it a 'current gen' system along with the Wii, Wii U, PS3 and 360.

Basically he's stating that technically it's "current gen" because it's currently available. I and many others don't see it that way. It's becoming a pointless topic to debate though... :(

Well he kinda contradicts himself. Because he says whatever exists in the present, but then says next gen will be whatever MS/Sony introduces next, implying that those systems would then replace the PS3/360 as current gen. So using that latter logic, the PS3 replaced the PS2 a long time ago. But yes, moot point either way.

The point is simple: for a short period of time, something can be "current generation" and "next generation" at the same time because the phrase means different things in different contexts.
