Does software on an external hard drive show up on the Wii U menu or another one

No. It still shows up on the Wii U's main menu screen row of icons.

when i turn on my wiiu the external hard drive turns on as well automatically and when i power down the wiiu the hard drive shuts off automatically as well

What HDD are you using, by the way? I'm planning to pick one up eventually and am looking for recommendations.
