I can't express how much I would love to play games like Mario Kart 64, Battletoads, Goldeneye etc. with online multiplayer.

I was wondering the same thing. I hope they do because not having it is definitely a turn off.

I understand Wii U VC games will have "Miiverse functionality," but what exactly does that entail? Online leaderboards and co-op? Just chat/messaging?

Some VC games on 3DS have download play rather than straight ports, so sure I could see online happening for Wii U.

Yes, in Japan Puyo Puyo 2 also had online on the Wii VC.
