The Lagombi being the EASY hunt in the demo terrifies and intrigues me.

I've never played MH, but I quite enjoyed it. Got him on my first run, but baaarely. I started picking up on dodging and sprinting as time went on.

Any pointers for a newbie? I had fun but am scared to try the hard one later! I was using a Greatsword, though, which might not be best.

Do you want me to give you an elitist response or actually be helpful? I could go either way.

The latter would be preferable >_>

At least I'm praising the difficulty/learning curve instead of whining about it being poorly designed. I see nothing wrong with the design, combat is simply very deliberate, ala Dark Souls.

Using the greatsword was your problem.

You have to really know what you're doing to use that weapon effectively.

I think you should just stop using the Greatsword and the Sword&Shield...and hunting horn. Double Sword/Long sword or GTFO.

Yep, started getting into it earlier on the 3DS. He wasn't very hard using the sword and shield, but damn... Using the great sword, he made me his chew toy.

Okay.

If you're going to continue using the GS, know that it is a very hit and run weapon (especially depending on the armor skills in use). Wait for openings, use the GS charge (make sure to time it correctly) and DODGE DODGE DODGE! Keep in mind you also have a block with the GS if you are having trouble reading the attacks and dodging accordingly.

Most first time players are having much better results with the SnS (Sword and Shield) so I would suggest trying that out to get a better hang of the game and to learn the monster's movesets before using something that is generally more difficult to play, such as the GS.

I think he should use the weapon he feels the most comfortable with and build his skill from there.

Also, Sword&Shield is godly.

i guess Lagombi is considered easy and maybe it's true, but i find him very annoying (worst of the three similar movesets). they should have put Aoashira (the honey bear) in his place as easy difficulty.
