Nintendo's employees never learned how to make games in HD so now they're spending time being re-educated.

This.

I said the same thing in another topic. Nintendo has to catch up to the rest of the industry when it comes to making HD games. Third parties already know how from making games for Sony and MS platforms.

Twisting words? Miyamoto outright said this in an interview. They never really worked with anything that was such a major departure from GameCube architecture. So in order to make the most of the WiiU, they have to spend some time re-educating their employees.

I know this board is troll central but that wasn't a cheap shot. It's the truth.

So for all we know there aren't even 2.5 million gamers with the console. Hmm...

Well it is like this. If they shipped 3+ mil and no one is buying them they wouldnt be shipping any more

So what are the latest shipping numbers? I keep seeing the same number from months ago. 3.06 million. Have they not shipped any more?

Miyamoto: We needed to create new development environments for wiiu and 3ds unlike wii which reused the gamecube architecture. We are unifying our development teams to accomodate this challenge and minimize the losses while preparing the shift. I think handhelds and consoles will coexist as the aim is different.

Miyamoto: For High End graphics there is a hurdle, since we have to reeducate our people. The development itself hasnt changed but we are recruiting specialists that can become core members in each specialized area. External Developers are used to shader techniques and we are collaborating a lot with external companies nowadays so we have a very good development structure.

That's probably why first party 3ds releases took time as well (or should have in the case of star fox 64 3D).

I would rather get a great game at the end of 2014 then a crap one at the beginning. Also they said we were getting the HD WW to hold us over till then, so anyone expecting it soon was misinformed anyway.

And what if it's bad?

What if it's the best?

Zelda games after Majora's Mask have been getting steadily worse, so that's unlikely.

I understand that's your opinion, but it's wrong.

Each Zelda has been better than the one before it.
With the lone exception of Skyward Sword, which is about as good as TP, if not slightly worse.

@Glory
Exactly, it's the architecture. I doubt it has to do with "inexperience with HD" as most stress that simply using HD isn't a hurdle.

@Jackal
Nintendo releases sales numbers quarterly. They wont post an update in numbers until the end of March.

DBPanterA:
I'm not so much saying that innovation and ideas are at an end as much as game developers are having a difficult time figuring out what people want anymore. Nintendo isn't alone in this, it's just that they are leading this strange crusade. I think that they have decided as you said, that the envelope has been pushed and we've had our 2D and 3D flatscreen games, we've had online games, we've had all kinds of games. The past is seriously competing with the present at this point. So they are trying to change the definition of gaming again, just like with the introduction of home consoles, but they are relying on methods that aren't very strong. 3D vision has always been a gimmick and its been around forever. It's never been a big money maker, just a novelty. Motion control isn't new either and although the Wiimote is a bit more advanced than the NES Zapper, it makes almost as good of a controller. The tablet idea is understandable on paper, but we already have actual tablets and multiple monitors, we have handhelds already, and the Wii U didn't even provide a fully functioning standalone tablet which may have been somewhat groundbreaking. I can see that Nintendo is trying to get inventive with their hardware decisions, but they need to think those through better and beta test them out more if they are to succeed. Maybe they just think they have the money to take the loss in fanbase now, but I don't think they are even thinking about that. The place that Nintendo is really losing ground though is software. They aren't taking full advantage of their hardware designs in order to make every kind of game there is. The games they are producing are fairly subpar anymore, getting outclassed by the likes of Halo. Yes that cheap excuse for an FPS that every PC FPS player originally laughed at because it was behind, is overtaking Nintendo's games in that same regard. This isn't to say that there haven't been new ideas over the last 10 years. Look at Portal or Bioshock for instance, both were good and original. Even Nintendo's OSs, GUIs, and database design is fairly bad these days for some reason.

I don't think it's a bad idea to recycle good working ideas. The XBox controller for instance takes better parts of Sony's and Nintendo's controllers and combines them. I'm not quite sure if that's why Nintendo decided they had to have some weird new controller but whatever. The classic controller works, SNES was a pretty good design, GameCube was better, and XBox was better than that.

Anyway my point is that the wow factor isn't entirely gone, it's just in a different place. No longer are the superficial details going to deliver that effect until someone invents and mass produces holobands or holodecks. There is still plenty of enjoyment in good gameplay aspects, good tonality, good story, and playing a game that really comes together and feels complete. Not that I can entirely disagree with your points, but think about this: the video game industry has a formula for their gamers, certain cues, certain themes, certain expectations. Why not play around with that formula some and challenge established norms? Not break the mold entirely because that wouldn't work (it would anger people), but if you really want a wow factor you've already got the set up you need to surprise people. In a good way.

WHY ON EARTH would Nintendo launch a system that they themselves have no idea how to build for? I mean for Gods sake its a current gen system spec wise with a second screen, something they've had since the DS days. AND YET Zelda is going to take a while because they're still trying to figure out how to design for a console that they themselves created.

Just die Nintendo.
