If I invest in a wii mote and a classic controller can i buy a wii point card to download old genesis games? I apologize for my ignorance, but an answer would be greatly appreciated

Yes, you'll have access to the entire Wii VC by going into Wii mode.

You need to do a system transfer from your Wii to the Wii U and then you can play them.
