Question about buying digital titles

#1Link HTPosted 3/20/2013 11:48:51 PM
Does the nintendo account function like steam? As in, you can erase and redownload any titles you own whenever you want?

I'm asking because I'm worried something might happen to the console or storage device I'm using and want to be sure I can just redownload my purchase.

thanks in advance

They really do not have an account system like those seen on steam, XBLA, or PSN.

What they do have is the Club Nintendo. When you purchase any title digitally, as long as your console is attached to your Club Nintendo account, it will be saved in there. You do have the opportunity to erase and re-add games, but if you buy a large enough external hard-drive this should be an issue.

I had an issue with my original Wii in 2011 (disc lens went out). They sent me a new Wii, and I simply had to download all the games I purchased from the VC and WiiWare again because it was tied to my Club Nintendo. Not a big deal.

You can redownload the game onto your console as many times as you'd like. However, these purchases are, for the moment, tied to your console. Nintendo has indicated this will change in the future to a more Steam-like system, but for now, this is what we're stuck with.

To their credit, Nintendo customer support is good to work with on these matters.

The games are NOT tied to your console, they are tied to your Nintendo Network ID (which can be linked to your Club Nintendo account) which is currently tied to your console.

What this means:
1) You cannot currently log in to your account via another console. But, this is planned to be possible --- there is even an option to use an existing NNID at the sign in screen; it just doesn't work yet. (The fact you can see recent purchases through the ddp.nintendo.com site, using your NNID login, should be proof of this)

2) If something happens to your Wii U, your content is NOT LOST. If it's damaged beyond repair, send it in to Nintendo and they'll transfer the account and you'll be able to re-download purchases on the new console; the same with if it's stolen and you can prove it (police report / NNID info) Yeah, it's a bit of a pain right now but...

3) Anyone on the console that the account is tied to can play digital content tied to the account. (And as said above, you can delete / re-download as much as you like)

4) If you tie your NNID to your Club Nintendo account, all (eligible) digital purchases (as well as the console itself) will automatically be registered into Club Nintendo. (Just need to fill out the surveys for the points)
