Have Xbox games on demand or the PS3 games in the Playstation Store been gold mines for Microsoft and Sony? It's not that apparent.

If they make an account system and have sales I would buy a ton of VC games. So far I've only bought a few RPGs and redeemed Club Nintendo rewards.

Total Virtual Console games sold as of December 31, 2007: over 10 million

I would say yes it is a goldmine.

People will buy millions of games from a library of over thousands on multiple different consoles if it is just one click away. Especially if they just released drivers for their current Wii U controllers.

Even if the only games available at launch were NES/SNES/N64/Wii/GB/GBA/DS Nintendo IPs, people would have a huge library of quality games to choose from. Plus, the only thing that would damage their pockets is hosting the servers.
