Yeah, I get he's their mascot and all, but at this point, it seems Nintendo can only get Mario games to sell big (not including the Wii games).

The announcement of Mario Kart at E3 is also further evidence.

They "can only get Mario games to sell big"? Well, sure, if you pretend that's the only franchise they have. Over here in the real world, Nintendo have a lot of games and franchises that move great numbers.

Well, it would be interesting if they could spread the Smash Bros. branding out into Kart / Sports / etc. in place of the Mario Kart / Sports / etc. titles. I'm sure Mario would still be present in the front line in such games, of course. Just let their other stars share in the spotlight like they do in Smash Bros. And then they can get more creative with the design of the stages in these games since the door would be wide open for creative levels and powerups and whatever else based on all those other franchises.

Is Disney too dependent on Mickey?

No. And neither is Nintendo too dependent on Mario. If you look at the best selling Wii games, most of the top 10 are not Mario titles.

NOT MARIO Wii Sports 81.64 million
SOMEWHAT MARIO Mario Kart Wii 34.01 million
NOT MARIO Wii Sports Resort 31.54 million
NOT MARIO Wii Play 28.02 million
MARIO New Super Mario Bros. Wii 27.61 million
NOT MARIO Wii Fit 22.67 million
NOT MARIO Wii Fit Plus 20.48 million
NOT REALLY MARIO Super Smash Bros. Brawl 10.79 million
MARIO Super Mario Galaxy 10.68 million
NOT MARIO Wii Party 7.94 million

There are 2 Mario games in the top 10. 1 more game centered around Mario characters (Mario Kart) and 1 more game that has Mario in it but in no way features Mario or Mario characters (Smash Bros).

So, arguably, 3 games could be Mario, and possibly a 4th (Brawl). But this shows Nintendo's success is based not around Mario but around fun casual games like Sports, Resort, Fit, Play, Party, etc.

Nothing comes close to Mario, and you know it.

That's why he's in more and more games (more than 15 games in the last 3 years.)

Keep in mind games like Luigi's Mansion are also dependent on Mario, because without him, the game wouldn't sell or exist for that matter.

Also keep in mind it was 3 Mario games that finally got interest in the 3DS.
