Gamestop to start adding a refurb fee to all console trade ins?

This email comes from a GameStop employee that would like to remain anonymous...

Apparently company-wide our trades are down, so the company is trying to make more money. ...From now on, any original Xbox 360, original PS3 or handheld system that is traded in is to be taken as defective (charging a refurb fee), i.e. we give the consumer less money. We won't be sending them out to defective. Instead, after the transaction is complete, we are told to immediately take it OUT of defective and sell it as is. Their excuse for the 360/PS3 is high failure rate. Their excuse for handhelds is completely different. Apparently, because we have to clean the system and reformat it, we must take it in as defective because we should be compensated for that.

Take this as a rumor for now, but a disturbing one if it turns out to be true. We've reached out to GameStop for comment and will update this story with their response.

That kind of sounds like it would be illegal. If they do that I'm sure a lot of people would just take their consoles elsewhere to sell.

I'm sorry, but the language in that email makes it fairly clear it's bull****.

It is from the employee, it isn't a copy and paste of what he supposedly read.

I wonder how enforceable that is. No doubt theres no law from stopping people from just saying eff off and walking out.

Ah, right, now that I think about it that does make sense, but it's still clearly bull****.
