Nintendo has admitted that Wii U wasn't able to maintain sales momentum after launch but the company hopes to drive hardware sales over the 'next several months' with new Mario Kart, Mario and Zelda Wii U games.

Wii U has sold 3.45 million units worldwide since launching in November 2012 and although it got off to a strong start, Nintendo struggled to keep up the momentum. In a statement in support of Nintendo's latest financial results, the company admitted: "Wii U was not able to maintain the initial sales momentum after the beginning of 2013 due to a delay in the development of subsequent software titles."

However, Nintendo is looking forward to a bright future for the console with games such as The Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, a new 3D Mario game and Mario Kart Wii U all on the horizon. The future looks good for 3DS, too with Pokemon X and Y, The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past 2 and Mario And Luigi: Dream Team all on the way. All these titles will, according to Nintendo, boost the sales of 3DS and Wii U.

"During the next several months, Nintendo expects to launch new titles in the Mario Kart (Wii U), Super Mario Bros. (Wii U), Wii Fit (Wii U), Pikmin (Wii U), The Legend of Zelda (Wii U and Nintendo 3DS), Mario & Luigi (Nintendo 3DS) and Pokémon (Nintendo 3DS) franchises. These games, along with titles from Nintendo's third-party publishing partners, will help drive hardware momentum and introduce new audiences to the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS platforms."

Talking of third-party software publishers, Nintendo re-iterated its plan to "actively support Japanese software developers in distributing their key software titles overseas."

It got off to a slow start but things are looking up for Wii U.

"next several months" meaning "november-december" obviously.

It's got work to do, but anyone saying that the Wii U was doomed is clearly having a major knee jerk.

I'm just hoping that they don't rush the Zelda.

It shouldn't need to be posted, but when people like yourself plague these boards with comments about it having no games, it does become a little necessary to make a point of.

It feels a bit like there's no way for us to win - when there are no games, you mock the Wii U for having no games. When games are announced, you make sarcastic remarks about us being excited for new games.

Yeah, that's a problem games had back then. You actually had to get good at them. - Mctias
