I mean, has there ever been a console with good games in the first year? Six months? I had the PS3(LOL) and it was a joke. The Wii was also very joke-like.

You know what else is a joke?

I'll let you think on it for a bit.

Well, yeah, plenty of consoles have had at least a few good games in the first year.

The Wii U's problem is more that, well, we're at about six months from launch now and it has had only two notable games released since the day it came out. That's a bit unprecedented, for me. Other launches, there have at least been a few games to talk about, even if they weren't games I was interested in. The Wii U had Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and Lego City... in March... after their November launch... and meanwhile we're still waiting for "launch window" games a lot of people probably purchased the system for.

NES:

Super Mario Bros.
Duck Hunt
Excitebike
Pinball
Ice Climbers

SNES:

Super Mario World
F-Zero
Pilot Wings
Gradius III
SimCity

Genesis:

Golden Axe
Ghouls and Ghosts

Nintendo 64:

Super Mario 64

Most launches have indeed seen quality releases, the Playstation and Saturn launches were iffy but quality games appeared in the months following launch. The phenomenon of weaker launches is relatively recent.

In theory there is no differens between theory and practice - but in practice, there is.

6 months ago:
"OMG UNPRECEDENTED third party support!!! Best launch line up of ALL TIME!!"

Today, after all the interesting launch window games got delayed several months. The multiplatform games look the same or worse on Wii U. Hyped up games ended up sucking (Aliens, ZombiU). Third-party devs are abandoning the system in droves:
"PSH is this your first console launch or something? This is EXACTLY WHAT YOU SHOULD'VE EXPECTED!!! Noob"

Nope, *NEVER*. Consoles always suck for the first couple of years after launch. At least since the GCN/ PS2 generation.
