No reason physical New Luigi can't be released same time as the download.

Nor does it take $10 extra of work....

US$10 is pretty much the standard retailer cut for a disc-based game.

The extra $10 is obviously to cover production and distribution of the disc.

However, I'm totally fine with that. I would be willing to pay +$10 for a physical version of any digital game.

Last of Us finished a day or two ago and won't be available in retail til June. Some people seriously have no clue.

Games also tend to sit around in the back room for a bit before retail release, though I'm not sure why.

Final builds go through quality control, configuration management, and approval processes. Nintendo will likely be making the same amount of their digital copy ($20) as the retail copy ($30) so this isn't some scheme to make more money. It probably just takes longer to produce and ship out hard copies. There is a ton that goes into it and we shouldn't even pretend to understand.

I will happily pay $10 more to have a disc, case, and instruction booklet. Plus I REALLY like the green case, a lot. I have a ridiculously huge backlog on PS3, 3DS and 360 that will keep me plenty busy. So I don't mind the wait.
