I owe my childhood to the late, great Gunpei Yokoi, designer of the Game Boy.

People really need to learn some history. There was this little company called Epyx that created a handheld portable gaming system called the Handy Game. It featured full-color graphics, cartridge games, an ambidextrous design and more than two buttons. It was completed in 1987.

But Epyx was too small a company to handle the marketing, distribution, etc., so the Handy Game sat in limbo. Then Nintendo sees it and creates the Game Boy, with no color, two buttons, but at around half the price. Nintendo is large enough that they have no problem whatsoever keeping shelves full of the Game Boy.

This is why Atari partnered with Epyx and released the Atari Lynx 3 months after the Game Boy. A handheld that was not only more powerful, more advanced, etc., but was actually a year older as well. But Atari was unable to distribute nearly as many as the Game Boy, so the rest is history.

Plenty of reasons to love Nintendo, the Game Boy isn't one of them.

Uh, I was 18 when the NES released in the US. I laugh at those who act like they are so special because they "grew up" with Nintendo. Nintendo wasn't even around when I was a child, so I don't owe Miyamoto or Nintendo anything.

A) No, it really doesn't.
B) Either way, it doesn't change the fact that I grew up with a Game Boy and owe my current status as a gamer to it.
