To those saying that the Wii U will succeed based on the 3DS' bounceback...

#1VyersPosted 7/1/2013 1:28:37 AM
The 3DS doesn't have as much trouble as the Wii U does.

1. The 3DS is using dated visuals, relative to the entire industry. They've already made games like these, whereas HD games are (or were) an unknown to them.

2. The 3DS bounced back, in part, because of an unprecedented price drop combined with a "care package".

3. The 3DS is still struggling in the US.

4. The 3DS has exactly one fewer company to compete with - two, if you consider that the Vita can't compete.

There's simply too many different things going on here.

Yeah 3d was certainly a lot more common than hd is now. Makes sense.

1. 3D visuals were also a new thing to them.

2. NeoGAF proved in one of their overwrought analysis topics that the price drop almost didn't affect 3DS sales and that it was all because of the games.

3. 200k units of Animal Crossing in four days is "struggling".

4. Agreed.

If the best selling gaming item in May according to NPD is struggling, then the US gaming industry is doomed. We should pack our bags while we still can and head for greener pastures. Does everybody still have their N-Gage?

As usual, good thread Vyers. This thread is already a success.

I do love revisionist history.

I love how ppl ignore other bigger early price drops and just focus on Nintendo.

Allow me to address the common responses.

1. The comparison... did it occur to you that there's a reason why they didn't gripe about having to delay games due to the difficulty found in implementing 3D visuals, yet said exactly that for HD with the Wii U?

2. Price drop - the price drop raised their reception back up. No one wanted a $250 machine with no games.

3. I think people really need to reassess what they define as a success. The statements being made are that the 3DS is a success because it's the #1. console on the market. Let's look at this market.

The 360 has been out for eight years.
The PS3 for seven.
The Wii for seven.
The PSP for eight.
The DS for nine.
The VITA is doing poorly.
The Wii U is doing poorly.

So what makes it a success - that it beats a couple poor performers, or that it beats out all of those consoles that are being/have already been phased out?

PS: May 2013 made less money for the industry than every single May for the past 13 years. That is an indication that the three consoles on the market, the Wii U, the VITA, and the 3DS, are not doing their jobs.

I thought people were basing Wii U's bounceback on Wii's success.

No, not at all. The 3DS has been consistently been in the top 2 with the 360 but has been averaging out as #1 frequently then 360 has.

4. The 3DS has exactly one fewer company to compete with - two, if you consider that the Vita can't compete.

Completely wrong. If anything, the portable market space is more stacked with competition then the dedicated home console space will ever be. Smartphones and tablets are huge competition for dedicated gaming devices but especially dedicated handhelds and Nintendo themselves have already come out and said that Apple is the biggest competition for them.

With that said, even smart devices, the strong games in the 3DS's library has made it the system to get. Wii U is in a similar position as its in desperate need of strong, quality exclusives in large numbers which is why Nintendo has the games coming out this year that they do. They need to drive sales.
