Was thinking of getting one, but I never see the 32 GB models anywhere, only 8GB. May need more storage than that eventually

Any USB storage device works.

(Recommended that if you get a hard drive, get one with its own power supply rather than one that uses power over USB.)

If you get a external usb hdd make sure it has it's own power supply. Wii U doesn't tend to work well with hdd's that are powered from the usb port. Alternitive to an hdd that has it's own supply is to use a usb y cable to power it from 2 usb ports or you can get a usb hub that has it's own power supply.
