The companies don't really try "dark" advertising anymore

Take a look at these Dreamcast teaser ads that aired on MTV prior to the systems launch.

We don't really see this kind of advertising for a new platform nowadays. Sony, Microsoft, Sega, and even Nintendo have done this kind of advertising in the 6th generation, but after that, it began to fizzle out in favor of more "universal" advertising. Not that non-edgy/mysterious ads aren't good, but selling your system as something mysterious and sophisticated would make consumers interested in the platform.

And, despite what people might say about the Dreamcast, at the time the launch these led up to was stellar. The launch was one thing about the system that was a solid success.

Those ads scare away the casual crowd, which has become increasingly important to games.

Of course they don't, that type of marketing is usually silly, ineffective, poorly conceived and aimed at the wrong people. Just look back at the PS3's initial marketing, they tried to "dark and moody" advertising scheme and it was terrible.

those were perfect for the era.

it was the turn of the millennium, and the upcoming generation was really gonna refine 3D graphics in a way that most gamers couldn't imagine. we had no idea what to expect and every preview screenshot of upcoming Dreamcast and PS2 titles in our Gamepros and EGMs was something to go crazy over and dog-ear the pages so we could show our friends.

now the next generation doesn't really feel like it's gonna do much that we couldn't already foresee, as we've seen ridiculously great graphics on PCs and 7th gen consoles already. so an ad campaign that's trying to symbolize a mysterious technological revolution would kinda be laughable. our generation is jaded now, kinda sad when you think about it. nobody's gonna have the same excitement we had when playing the first 3D games on 32X, Saturn, PS1, N64, etc, and seeing the dawn of the 6th generation and how it refined everything and reached new heights. now the big thing to get excited for is used game policies...

plus with Xbone's permanently active Kinect and news of them giving skype info to the NSA, telling people that their console is "thinking" and "alive" would scare the pants off any potential buyers haha

I doubt advertising like that actually works as well as advertising that just shows a lot of violence and sex. Appeal to the primal level of thought instead of the intellectual.
