Is Nintendo capable of making a game with a great/emotional/serious story?

Something that will make me feel sad or torn and hate the bad guy with everything I have in me. A game where I'm emotionally invested in the characters and story. Is Fire Emblem the closest? The stories never seemed to really stand out for me (Except the GC one, that one was awesome).

I think the closest series they have is Zelda, but I don't think fans would like seeing death in any way or form in Zelda.

And it doesn't even need to be a huge budget AAA title; EBA had me emotional with some of their songs, Deadly Premonition made me hate the bad guy and the story just needs to be dark and not so cliche.

Can they? Yes

Will they? Probably not

^^^^ I know this will be a prevailing answer... But are they actually capable? What games have they created that have this kind of story/chars?

Mother 3. But nobody will know because stupid Nintendo of America didnt even give the game teh respect it deserves by localizing it.

Thats how awful NoA is.

Pretty sure Mother 3 would fit the bill.

Xenoblade probably should too.

That's it... I think?

well they own Monolith, who are much more serious in their tone than Square-Enix for sure.

and yeah, despite your opinions of their quality compared to SE, Takahashi (Monolith's frontman) was Square's most "serious" depressing and dark writer they had. his FF7 script (which evolved into Xenogears) was rejected from being an FF title for being too serious, depressing, religiously offensive, and complex.

i dont want something offensive, just something a little more serious.

and i didn't actually get to play xenoblade or xenogears so I cant comment on that.

but is that really all?

Something is not right when you have to think of games outside of the last few game outside of xenoblade. What about that puzzle game I read about in game informer they said the story was pretty emotional and series little fire or something like that.

There's plenty out there already, why bother? What business sense does it make to get in on an audience so over-saturated already?

I can't imagine people's obsession with making Nintendo just like everyone else.

Will they? As long as Miyamoto is over development, Nintendo EAD probably won't.

With my corrections noted, Monolith Soft tends to make deeper more story driven games. Intelligent systems systems tends to make deeper more story driven games. These are both subsidiaries of Nintendo the same way Naughty Dog is a subsidiary of Sony and Bungie used to be a Subsidiary of Microsoft. Not including them in any discussion about Nintendo made games would be like saying Halo isn't a Microsoft IP and Uncharted isn't a Sony IP.

Another thing to note is if given full freedom, I wouldn't be surprised to see Retro Studios do something very story driven however, like Nintendo EAD, I just don't see that happening as long as Miyamoto has a say.
