Why is Super Smash Bros so popular?

The game is imbalanced. Brawl fans themselves group the characters into tiers, with Meta Knight at the top, and chars like Sonic near the bottom. Competitive matches pretty much come down to two people playing Fox on Final Destination. So why is it so popular if it's also so bad? That's like if Valve released TF2, but the only good character was the Scout, and the only good map was Granary or something.

Because nearly everybody who buys it never gets so deeply into it that they notice.

What makes it more fun than other fighters that aren't as flawed?

Considering the fact it was designed as a fun multiplayer game rather then a highly competitive fighter I would say being imbalanced is not that big a deal.

Its because its so simple to play, you just mash buttons.

Couple that with the fact that any game with violence and attacking other players really appeals to the pre-teens and teens.

Personally, I wouldn't play it on a bet.

The hype with little kids, honestly. We went nuts for SSB and SSBM. Then my little brother went nuts for SSBB.

Most fighting games are hideously unbalanced, and balance is rarely a significant factor in how popular a game is.

These are the two main reasons Smash Bros is so popular:

- It has a roster of highly recognizable and iconic mascot characters
- It's very accessible and easy to learn

It's Nintendo characters beating the crap out of each other.

What makes it more fun than other fighters that aren't as flawed?

1. It's more of a "brawler" than a traditional fighter.
2. It has more of a party game feel for most, compared to the competitive nature if other fighters.
3. It has a lot if randomness with the items to help create a sense of balance, even if it isn't.

This is my opinion and the impression I get of my friends opinions.

Now, if you don't like it, that's fine. But these are done of the reasons I like it.
