Why does Europe hate Nintendo?

This isn't a recent phenomenon, either, back in the SNES vs. Genesis/Mega Drive days, the latter had a substantial lead in the European market. In short, why has Nintendo never had much success in the PAL regions?

I'm pretty sure Europe doesn't get Atlus RPGs until ages after release. I'm no Atlus fan so I don't care though.

You can't say we Europeans as a whole lack sentimentality. Brits and Germans definitely do, but Frenchies, Spaniards and us Italians have a ton of it (incidentally, Nintendo really is more successful in France).
