Nah, the only thing is his name.

Like, Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, and Mario Tennis are all completely different genres and game types. His real games are typically years apart (with the exception of NSMB 2 and U), and the sports games are spread wide enough that it's a welcome addition.

The character? Yes, he's done a crap ton of things. But the main mario series? No, Mario is made up of several different side series like Mario Kart and Mario RPG's, and spin-offs like Wario Land and Yoshi's Island. We only get a 3D Mario game once or on rare occasions, twice a generation. We get a Mario Kart only once per console. So Mario is everywhere, but he's not comming out with a platformer every year lik COD does.

No, what I mean is that Mario's mainline games are usually 3 to 5 years appart from eachother. Whereas there is a new mainline CoD entry every year.

IMO, Mario the character can't really be milked because he was specifically designed to be a mascot character who could appear in any kind of game. Some of the series he appears in, however, are somewhat milked.
