Why the gaming industry cannot collapse now.

I posted this in another thread discussing whether or not Nintendo would survive another crash but I thought that the excerpt from the book I typed was worth sharing on a bigger scale because I'm really curious as to why so many people keep talking about a potential crash.

Anyways,

Here's why I think a new Video Game Crash can't happen. The reason the original Video Game Crash happened was because of the over saturation of the market with gaming consoles.

Here's an excerpt from the book Super Mario by Jeff Ryan (It's a really great book about the rise of Nintendo from the beginning all the way up to the days of the Wii. Excellent book and I highly recommend it.);

"The real problem came from the retail side. Department stores, toy stores, and electronics stores needed to stock the latest games and consoles. Nowadays, and more or less since 1983, that has meant 3 or 4 home consoles, and maybe one or two portable consoles, plus a selection of games for each system.

Imagine what it was like in 1983. The Atari 2600 was still dominant. It's replacement, Atari 5200 has recently hit stores. It was competing for shelf space with the ColecoVision and Coleco's new Gemini, Mattel's Intellivision and Intellivision II, the Bally Astrocade, the Fairchild Channel F System II, the Magnavox Odyssey II, the Vectrex, the Emerson Arcadia 2001, and the VTech CreatiVision. Individual stores such as Sears and Radio Shack had proprietary systems as well--Tele-Games and the Tandyvision.

And these were just the consoles! Atari had branched out into computers with the Atari 400 and 800 personal computers. Add to that Texas Instruments TI 99/4A, The Commodore VIC-20 and Commodore 64, the Timex Sinclair, The Apple II and Lisa, the Mattel Aquarius, and the Coleco Adam. Each one had it's own software library. Each had a half dozen accessories. All were sold as game machines that could also run a spreadsheet or type a letter. None were compatible with the others. Just about every company had announced plans to ship a brand new console or computer in 1984 (the very next year)."

So this is really what caused the original crash, I can't imagine what would cause it today. I think everyone that fears it just wants some catastrophe to happen to the industry so they can say they were there. lol Basically the over-saturation of the market confused consumers SO badly, that no one wanted to buy one. Would you go into a store, notice all the pretty computers/consoles cost around $800 and higher and feel safe with investing in just one? Or would you decide it's best to wait it out and see what happens? That's what people did in the 80's.

Also, take into mind that computers and consoles were a very new thing that the average home consumer didn't completely understand back then. There wasn't really such a thing as a "Game Console" in the beginning as many of them were all called "Computers". The Atari systems were the first to come along and really make the point that they just play games but even then, sometimes they came with applications and the sort. Hell, the NES once had a sewing machine attachment and application. Those were weird days.

People aren't talking about an industry crash because they're afraid it will happen.
They're talking about it because they think it will save the Wii U.
Or they think Nintendo will be the only one left if it happens and they'll "save" the industry.

Well why is an entire industry crash necessary to save the Wii U?

This is true but today the blurred line between what a computer is and what a game console is, is very visible so because of this, many consumers can look at your list and see it like this.

Smartphones and Tablets. <These are tech accessories. There are many types, but really the only divisions are iOS, Android and Windows Mobile. So if we have to quantify this category, it's 3.

PC's < This is a computer. People know what they are, and know what they do. There's either OSX, Windows or Linux. There are only 3 in existence. But only 2 of these make sense to the average consumer.

3DS, Vita, Nvidia Shield < These are portable consoles. The Nvidia Shield plays PC games but it's still a handheld console. This is only 3 consoles.

Wii U, PS4, XB1, Ouya <Let's not forget the Ouya! This is only 4 home consoles.

This isn't really a true over-saturation at all. Especially since people these days, know the difference.

you are completely missing the point yes people know the difference between platforms but with so many choices to pick from you could get enough gaming enjoyment out of say a 3ds and there would be no point to buy any of the other platforms cause you got your gaming fix on just 1 platform.

Well that's not the case because there are literally millions of consumers that have not and still are not satisfied with just one gaming console. People buy multiple consoles all the time. I don't see the majority thinking that way.
