Wii U Virtual Console Question

#1shanafanPosted 8/26/2013 10:45:55 AM
From my Wii days, I have some NES and SNES titles saved on a SD card that I would play right off the SD card in my Wii.

I tried going into Wii Mode on the Wii U to play these titles from the SD card, but the Wii gave me an error that the titles couldn't be played.

Is there a way in the Wii U menu to play NES and SNES VC titles off the SD card?

Thanks

U need to perform a system transfer from your old wii to your wii u. Look it up in the wii u settings

Nope you've gotta transfer all your VC games to the Wii U. Simply playing them off the SD card won't work. Btw this means once transferred you can never use them on the original system anymore. I chose not to transfer mine because i'd like to keep them on my original Wii. Plus over the course of the original Wii's lifespan i downloaded well over 300 games. I'm not sitting around waiting to transfer all that.

Just be aware that this will transfer all licenses over to Wii U and your Wii console will no longer have access to these titles. I wouldn't do it unless I was selling the Wii afterwards.

The can only be played in wii mode unless it is a game that is out on wii u and u can for a small fee upgrade to the wii u version- the benefits being, played in wii u mode, gamepad play and off tv play and customizable controls

i'm gonna go out on a limb and assume you've sold your original wii. in which case unfortunately, you're screwed.

And if you don't have the old Wii that you bought the games on there is no way you can ever play them. (the game files on that SD card are tied to the Wii you bought them on and only that Wii can play or transfer them).

Somebody's about to be very pissed if they did sell their Wii already. Man would that ever suck!

I still have my Wii thankfully.

But question though, transferring licenses.. being a SD card, wouldn't the game still be on it? Are there measures in the Wii to prevent the playback? I guess the file is altered by the Wii U once it is transferred.

I don't know all the technical workings of it but if a game was originally downloaded to one system it's not ever going to work on another unless Nintendo themselves does it. Say for example you needed a full replacement on your broken system. Perhaps someone else can give you a more detailed explanation.
