Should Nintendo have waited until this year to release the Wii U?

I mean I get how it's good to get a head start on your competitors by releasing your system a year earlier. But in this case, it didn't help Nintendo at all. It sold miserably because of lack of games at launch. If they had waited until this year, they could have launch it with 2 new mario games, zelda wind waker, sonic lost world, DKC tropical freeze, pikmin 3, rayman legends, wonderful 101. Imagine all those on launch day. They would've made a killing. I would've been outside at 5am with my whole paycheck to get one. This would've been a much better idea in my opinion. The PS4/xbone don't have any launch titles I'm interested in. So Nintendo would've gotten all my money.

Think of it this way, if the Wii U had launched this year, then it would've sold ~3 million less lifetime. In fact, it would've completely been left in the dust (even though it already will).

I feel like with the industry today, no matter when they released it there would be a yearly drought of killer apps

in fact I think that's how it will go for most systems, look at 3DS, VITA, and PS3

just look at some them already, they sold well initially but went a long time without taking off

Nintendo has to hope they can appeal to gamers:

1. while the Wii U is getting great games

2. before the PS4/XBox One get great games

this is just like the inital Xbox 360 and PS3 launch, and the Xbox 360 killed the PS3, at least ATM, their both doing fairly okay now

People would have still whined. At least right now they have the advantage of not having next gen competition from Sony and Microsoft. I am still expecting them to hold that advantage for a while afterwards seeing as PS4 and XBone are going to have the same low game problems that Nintendo has been putting up with.

If the specs havent changed, then no. Its better that the wii u had a head start.

Getting caught in the numbers games right next to other two consoles is not the best way to do things.

No, they would still have the same problems as they did releasing a year ago. They would have budgeted the same amount of time for making the games, and when they ran into the same delays, they would have had to push everything back to next year. So instead of hitting their stride when the other guys come out, they would have been a full year behind.

So if Nintendo changed the name of the Wii - U, would they be pulling a U-Wii?

That's definitely possible. Any kind of launch this year would mean they had to have anticipated their development problems to get any advantage.

They've never have launched with all of those, even if they were all ready on launch day. Some would have been held back for later, so as now to crowd out the others.

I've been enjoying mine since day one so I'm happy it was released last November. Waiting another year woulda prohibited all my enjoyment!
