NEWS Nintendo UK exec says 'many people still don't know Wii U is a new console'
In May, it emerged that Nintendo was sending messages to Wii owners via the WiiConnect24 service stressing that Wii U is a brand new console and "not just an upgrade".
And now Nintendo UK wants to drive that message home by rolling out a new marketing campaign, MCV reports. This will include booking in-store space at Tesco and sending a five page leaflet to 300,000 of the supermarket's customers who bought a Wii but haven't picked up another console.
Pearce said: "There was a big misconception at launch about what Wii U is. And one of the big messages is that this is a new console and a new controller. There are many people out there that don't know what this is."
"We haven't had the sales we wanted on Wii U hardware. We haven't had the software for most of this year. But we have some quite ambitious numbers, particularly with some of our biggest franchises coming.
"Our monthly tracking shows that Wii remains the No.1 console for brand awareness. This offers us a massive opportunity to convert Wii owners to Wii U."
Nintendo's most recent quarterly financial report showed that worldwide Wii U sales came in at just 160,000 in the three months between April and July.
What an awful marketing department. Hopefully awareness picks up because those April-July sales are pretty disappointing.

Of course people don't know what a Wii U is. That's what happens when:
1. The name and look of the console are similar to the Wii... a console which already had a number of add-ons.
2. The ads treat the Gamepad as another Wii add-on.

In SA2, it's Super Sonic and Hyper Shadow.
Been telling people for years now that it was stupid how they advertised it and that no one knew it was a new system. Everyone on gamefaqs acts like of course everyone knows.
But cousin she's a hardcore gamer and when I suggested she get a Wii U, she said she didn't trust her kids with a tablet add on. She even assumed "Wii U" games meant games that needed the controller ~_~.
Well, at least they acknowledged their mistake. We should be seeing a much larger marketing push around the holidays, especially since Nintendo recently bought the ex-playstation marketing team.
I agree with some of the comments in that article. Nintendo needs to re-brand Wii U into Wii 2, or something to that effect that gets the message across.
Nintendo was stupid. You don't keep the "Wii" brand and not include "2" in the title. Look at Playstation - Playstation 1, Playstation 2, Playstation 3. Nintendo tried to be cute and clever with the stupid "U" branding and now people think it's some sort of Wii upgrade. Number your consoles if you're going to keep the same brand name. Otherwise, change the name altogether.
Gaming is going to die again.
The majority of Wii owners know what Wii U is they just aren't interested their casual attention is on phones/tablets.

I want to know who came up with / approved the name Wii U. Has he been fired?
Forget about XBOX One. This is my XBOX720: i7 2600 @3.4Ghz | ATI 6850 1GB | 8GB DDR3 | Asus P8P67 LE
Now playing: Yakuza 5, Bioshock Infinite
Should of named it the WiiHD 2
They wanted the get the "hardcore" audience. Naming it something like that would of made it sound Bad Ass.
Instead they take the most embarrassing name for a System ever the Wii Wii and name it the Wii Wii on U.
Would have been good trolling if not old article
Wii U+Xbox One+Steam Box :)
