Aonuma says that the team want to try out new things and they have started doing this with The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, which allows users to tackle dungeons in any order.

“Something that is ‘traditional’ is in a sense often something that copies previous works, so if you continue doing that, it gradually takes away from its uniqueness,” says Aonuma. “So we’re currently working on making those parts more and more unique.”

“So, by no means, am I tired of it,” Aonuma reiterates with a laugh. “Rather, the more we change it, the more I get fired up. Having someone think ‘Huh? Is this Zelda?!’ at first, then ‘Oh, it is Zelda,’ is what we’re going for. Something that wouldn’t make it matter whether Link or Princess Zelda appear in it or not. Something where it wouldn’t even matter if Zelda is actually a princess, or not.”

I like this. My favorite games are inevitably titles that mix things up and try something new.

The most positive thing that came out of this interview (not mentioned here) is that the Zelda team moved assets created for the new Zelda and applied them to WW. This could mean that Zelda U isn't quite as far off as we might have thought. There could be hope for holiday 2014.

I am both scared and intrigued at the same time.

I'm not exactly "normal." Hope this isn't a problem.

The thing he said about Zelda being a princess or not makes me wonder if he really knows what needs to change ASAP and what shouldn't.

I really hope they don't pull a Final Fantasy/Lords of Shadow/Resident Evil 5+ syndrome on Zelda, or a Sticker Star.

good to hear. IMO the great Zelda game is Majora's Mask because it's a risky game with little regard for appealing to fans of the previous and just satisfying people who want the same. it's an experiment. and i think it's flawed but i love it for that.

One idea they were tossing around was non liner dungeons. So you could complete any one of them in any order, and the others would be passable.

To be fair, the overall plot of the MGS series sounds like it was written by a 7 year old on amphetamines.-CrystalKing5426

Read this a couple days ago.

As far as non-linearity goes, I hope they take the Demon/Dark Souls route. I don't care much for Hub worlds in Action Adventure games, but these games do it right by making completely unique worlds within the game that connect to one another. You can complete the areas in the game in any order you like.

The three Zelda's that shake up the formula the most imo are my favorites. Majora's Mask, Wind Waker and Skyward Sword.
