How necessary is the Wii U gamepad?

Is it necessary? What sort of question is that? If it were necessary, than considering no other console has ever had one, the Wii U would be the first ever game console, wouldn't it?

Anyway, some games benefit a lot more than others. Having the inventory and HUD on the lower screen for a lot of games is a nice feature. Batman Arkham City was great simply for being able to look at the map without pausing. And of course, any game supporting off-TV play makes great use of the controller.

Yes. Some games allow alternate playing methods, but a good amount require it.

Just look on the back of the games to determine.

First of all, most reports peg it closer to one hundred than two hundred if it were actually to be available at retail.

Second, yes, it's necessary to have the gamepad for a number of functions on the Wii U. It comes packaged with the system, so unless somone on eBay rips you off, you'll have it when you buy the system.
