How necessary is the Wii U gamepad?

Except for the fact it doesn't cost $200. Currently a new replacement Gamepad is $140 through Nintendo.

The controller only costed between 50-100$, and it was integrated to work with system.

You seriously think the Controller cost more than the console?
You seriously think a console more powerful than the PS360 costs THAT much less?

I didn't pay that much for a replacement Gamepad. I wonder if it has to do with the situation....

It's not necessary for all games (most support the Pro Controller) but it is required to set the Wii U up for the first time. I will add, after you've used it for a little while you will hopefully really enjoy it.
