Here's another one. In the original Donkey Kong arcade game, Mario's mouth was mistaken for a mustache.

Mario's name was originally going to be Mr. Video, who was to be the star character in every game Miyamoto made. His name was changed to Jumpman, which was later changed to Mario.

Miyamoto said that if he had gone through with the name Mr. Video, Mario likely would have "disappeared off the face of the Earth."

Here's another fact. In the original Donkey Kong arcade, the only reason Mario wears his signature red hat is because it would have been too hard to animate his hair.

Really? An Italian plumber managed a Japanese building in the 80's? Now that is what I call breaking down barriers!

Incorrect. Mario was designed beforehand they only named him after the landlord. The design was based on graphical limitations of early video game systems. Hat and mustache was to avoid moving mouth and hair and the red was to make him stand out against blue, a common background color.

My fun fact: Nintendo used to make roundish lego bricks called N&B Blocks. They didn't last long but there was a level in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins made out of them.
