Has Nintendo ever blatantly copied a popular franchise?

People say Playstation All Stars Battle Royale was a blatant copy of Super Smash Bros., and whether you agree with that or not, it is extremely common in the video game business to have games that copy each other.

And I'm not just talking about being in the same genre, I mean blatantly being like another popular franchise, commonly trying to reap off the success of a recent popular franchise (like how Kinect Sports was seen in relation with Wii Sports)

My question is, has Nintendo ever done this to a blatant degree, copying of a popular franchise.

Hardware can be counted as well, similar to how Playstation Move is similar to the Wii Remote, or how both the Playstation controllers and XBox controllers both have similar layouts to a SNES controller.

To be fair, the overall plot of the MGS series sounds like it was written by a 7 year old on amphetamines.-CrystalKing5426
