Is Earthbound still good? In 2014?

Some RPGs are still really fun... but is this a Nintendo fanboy only thing? I used to be a fanboy, 10 years ago... wanted Mother 1/3 in America, without ever playing Mother 2 "Earthbound". It was huge hype on this board, and controversy over $2 extra dollars for the purchase.

What's the truth? Is it amazing, like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, etc? Or is it just a Smash Bros shoo-in's big game? I heard it's funny/quirky. But gameplay... is it a grind-fest? Balanced fights? Good story?

It's about as good as most SNES RPGs. Though it does show some innovation, such as allowing you to automatically win random battles if you're far too overleveled for them. Something other RPGs could stand to learn.

I played it for the first time on the Wii U VC and I liked it a lot. It's very quirky. Every character has something bizarre to say, so it's a lot of fun exploring all the areas and talking to everyone. The battle system isn't mind-blowingly interesting, but it's unobtrusive and gets the job done. Grinding was never really an issue.

I played Mother 3 as well, and that's an excellent game. It has a very similar battle system to Earthbound, but it has a much more complex and developed story. Both it and Earthbound are well worth playing.

Gameplay isn't amazing, but it's good and fun. What makes this game worth it is just how unique it is. You'll have a hard time to find an RPG like it, modern or old.

I had fun with it. Never played it back on the SNES.
