Batman: Arkham Knight - 'Wii U Could Not Meet Gameplay Objectives'

In an interview with NowGamer, Rocksteady's Dax Ginn explained that the decision to release Batman: Arkham Knight on PS4, Xbox One and PC and not Wii U, PS3 and Xbox 360, was made in response to the question: "what do we have to do to make the Batmobile work?".

"It was the one thing we hadnít done," Ginn explained. "Once we decided we were going to commit to the Batmobile, all these other technical decisions were made for us."

"We knew that we had to do it right Ė the imagination of the experience of driving the Batmobile that people have is that itís fast, that itís destructive, itís kind of a tank in Gotham City, but itís also highly technical Ė all of those things can only be done on next-gen," said Ginn.

We asked Ginn whether this means that Arkham Knight is a game that just wouldn't have worked on PS3 and Xbox 360.

"Not in the way that people imagine it. Itís the power fantasy of driving this legendary vehicle; if it can only do a top speed of 25 mph thatís not the power fantasy and thatís why we couldnít have done that previously," Ginn responded.

We followed up with Ginn to ask whether that's the same issue that's arisen with the Wii U, whether the console doesn't have the power for Rocksteady to do what they wanted with Arkham Knight.

"We have to make our technology choices specifically with reference to the gameplay objectives that we want, so we choose the platforms that are going to give us that," said Ginn.

Just goes to show that having a powerful console is necessary for certain aspects of gameplay that simply can not be replicated on a weaker console.

Hopefully Nintendo ponies up the cash so that their next console can compete with the next Sony and MS console from a technical standpoint, and we can finally get some of these great third party games.

No, that's just bull. Plenty of games have done it before. They're just using the game as shameless 'next-gen' promotion, but I can assure there's nothing 'next-gen' about the gameplay.

In SA2, it's Super Sonic and Hyper Shadow.

Ginn needs to stop getting 'next gen' wrong.

Graphics are part of next-gen. I'm glad they abandon all the older and weaker(Wii U) consoles. Making cross-gen games only results in a worse game for the new platforms. Watch Dogs and Destiny should have dropped last gen too, but I imagine turning away a user base of well over 100 million is not popular business decision.

Last gen sales have dropped off a cliff though so I think cross-gen will be done many games after 2014.

Translation: PS360 and Wii U are too outdated to make the game they wanted.

Totally right, TC! Because the PS4 and the XBOX ONE are such powerhouses of gaming...

Yeah, power is so necessary for the batmobile to be able to move at high speeds... yeah, nevermind the fact that engines are scalable... or visual effects... or resolution... or the A.I.
