is it not ps4/x1/wiiu?

#1Yoshikun-Posted 4/10/2014 7:42:04 AM
Why do I keep seeing ps3/360/wiiu from a whole bunch of posters who claim wii u is last Gen just cuz of its middling hardware compared to the ps4/x1 when clearly its the topic title? Where would the wii fall then? ps2/Xbox/wii?

The people who define generations by hardware have their heads up their asses.

Yes. Hardware-wise, the Wii was little more than a gamecube with a fancy controller and an OS update.

The WiiU has power roughly on-par or slightly surpassing the PS3/360, again with a fancy controller. It is not on the level of the XBO/PS4, and it serves a different market than they do. Those two machines are focused on social media and other 'beyond-gaming' applications, for better or for worse (protip: for worse).

People that are looking to buy an XBO or a PS4 are not the same kind of people that are looking to buy a WiiU. It's at a lower price point, closer to the PS3/360, and with a feature set that is closer to the PS3/360 than it is to the XBO/PS4. This is why people say that it competes with those consoles instead of the current-gen consoles.

Because idiocy.

It isn't any less of an upgrade/what it should have been from the Wii than the PS4/Xboned is to their predecessors.

Elaboration: People get hung up on computing power for some unknown, likely dumb reason. People assign too much importance to it, either as a negative point ("This console sucks because it doesn't have enough pixels!") or as a defensive point ("This console has just as many pixels as Console X so it's in the same league!").

The fact of the matter is, the market that the WiiU serves is closer to the market for the PS3/360 than the market for the XBO/PS4. Same deal with the Wii vs. the PS2/Xbox market over the PS3/360 market. Nintendo has deliberately been targeting the market for 'previous generation' for these last two generations because they know they aren't positioned to compete directly with the current-gen market. Their strategy is to abandon the computing power arms race and instead bank on novelty and a more accessible price point.

Funny you say people get hung up on power then go on to say a bunch of stuff proven wrong already about the wii u. It is beyond the ps3/360. not on par or slightly surpassing. It is beyond their capability while still being less then the ps4/x1. At this point the difference between the 3 current gens are not truly known as the wii u has yet to be fully understood part wise. No one even knows what video card it actually is based off of and all the guesses have been shot down. Also if specs actually mattered PC gaming would be all we would need.

This. All that being said though, the term "generation" has nothing to do with demographics or marketing strategy. The WiiU is an 8th generation machine by virtue of the fact that it is the successor to Nintendo's 7th generation machine, the Wii. That Nintendo has positioned the WiiU to compete with 7th gen consoles has no bearing on determining what generation it is.

Also, people think that taking a swipe at the WiiU by claiming it is last gen somehow makes them cooler

The Wii was already 5-8 years behind so it's OK to stay on that course? Not only is WiiU comparable to 360/PS3 its even lacking basic features those had like a base voice chat, DVD/CD drive, diverse game library, quality online, multimedia entertainment machine.

Im also pretty sure my XB1 plays video games... but continuw the true idiocy generic knock that XB1 is focused on entertainment and has no games LOL

It isn't "behind" if the features aren't necessary. And nice jab at library. The Wii/U wouldn't be behind in library if the industry didn't brainwash devs into not caring about Nintendo.
